Maggie wouldn’t admit it, not since she’d practically pushed her daughter to attend the ball, but she was getting worried about her. More than Amber or Ruth, she had been hoping this would be the year that Amber’s mate found her. What she hadn’t expected was that her daughter’s mate would be the son of an alpha. She’d seen the big man pick up her daughter and carry her out of the room. She’d also learned he was a Barringer.

“Is it so strange that your daughter would be my son’s mate, Maggie?”

Maggie jumped, startled at the husky voice that sounded behind her. Turning, she had to command her knees not to buckle when she saw the man standing there. “Adam.”

“One and the same, my Maggie fair.” He took her hand and the kissed the top, letting his mouth linger longer than was acceptable. He’d always had the manners of a Victorian aristocrat. They continued to stare at each other until she realized he still held her hand. Blushing, she pulled it away, hiding it behind the full skirt of her dress. Damn it, she was a grown woman, a powerful witch, and this man could still make her blush. Thoughts of her late husband filled her with remorse. Ralph had been her true-mate, but there was no doubt Adam Barringer had stolen a piece of her heart.

As if the movement had drawn his attention to her dress, he said, “You look just like a fairy-tale princess.”

She blushed again, this time a bright, fiery red. She usually didn’t attend the balls. She’d thought the premonition to attend this year’s ball had been about Amber finding her mate. Looking at the man before her, she wasn’t so certain the vision had solely concerned Amber. She’d told her mother about the vision and as matriarch she’d deemed that all the single witches of the coven had to attend. It was truly the only way to ensure Amber would be there.

Maggie had heard rumors that Adam had stepped down as alpha. She knew his mate had passed away several years ago. Her beloved husband had been gone even longer. Her blue eyes dimmed remembering her Ralph. He had been the love of her life, a kind-hearted human who had given her years of joy.

Seeing the desire burning in the wolf’s dark brown eyes, she knew she might still have years of passion and love before her. With Adam. If she had the courage.

“I would have loved you as a mate, Maggie.”

Maggie closed her eyes. He’d always known what she’d been thinking. They’d both known they weren’t true-mates. His wolf hadn’t howled at the moon and her witchy senses hadn’t sparked.

But, oh, how they had loved.

“It’s time, Maggie.”

Maggie opened her eyes. She saw the lines around his eyes that hadn’t been there thirty years ago. The fullness of his shoulders under the dark blue tux. He was no longer the wild and untamed wolf that had taken her night after night that long ago summer. He was a mature man, a man who knew what he wanted.
